Georgia Men and Women Travel to Tennessee
January 25, 2019 | Swimming & Diving
ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia men's and women's swimming and diving squads will travel to Knoxville on Saturday to take on Tennessee.
Â
The meet begins at 11 a.m. in the Allan Jones Aquatic Center and will be broadcast on the SEC Network with Rich Burk doing play-by-play accompanied by Rowdy Gaines (swimming) and Cynthia Potter (diving) offering analysis.
Â
The Lady Bulldogs are 2-2 and stand 11th nationally, while the Bulldogs are 12th with a mark of 2-2. The No. 5 Lady Volunteers are 4-2 and the No. 11 Volunteers are 4-3.
Â
"I think the thing we want to accomplish as a team is being competitive, like we were against Texas, keeping our focus the whole meet," said junior Javier Acevedo. "We know that they're a strong team swimming- and diving-wise, so if we compete at the level that we did against Texas, I think we'll end up on top."
Â
"I'm excited for the Tennessee meet because we've had a lot of meets at home this season," said junior diver McKensi Austin. "This is only our second traveling meet, which has been nice because it's given us a good prep going into SECs. I'm excited to get on the road and get in a new environment, and it's always nice to get that outside practice in for going into postseason."
Â
Currently, six Georgia swimmers hold 10 spots on the top-10 times lists in the country.Â
Â
Junior Veronica Burchill is ranked No. 7 in both the 100 freestyle (47.37) and in the 100 butterfly (51.35). Sophomore Courtney Harnish is No. 3 in the 500 freestyle (4:43.06) and No. 8 in the 1,000 freestyle (9:45.52). Freshman Dakota Luther holds the sixth-best time in the 200 butterfly (1:53.55).
Â
Sophomore Greg Reed stands No. 3 in the 1,000 freestyle (8:55.600) and No. 9 in the 1,650 freestyle (14:50.86). Sophomore Camden Murphy is No. 3 in the 100 butterfly (45.47) and has the No. 4 spot in the 200 butterfly (1:41.51). Acevedo has the fifth-fastest time in the 200 backstroke (1:39.88).
Â
This will be the last conference meet for Georgia before hosting the SEC Championships in February.Â
Â
Georgia returns home for Senior Day against Emory on Feb. 2 at 11 a.m. The 2019 SEC Championships will take place at Gabrielsen Natatorium Feb. 19-23.
