ATHENS - Despite double-digit scoring performances from Pachis Roberts and Caliya Robinson, the Lady Bulldogs (12-12, 4-7) fell to the Kentucky Wildcats (17-8, 8-4) 66-56 Thursday night at Stegeman Coliseum.
Roberts, a redshirt senior, led all scorers with 22 points which marked her fourth 20-point output of the season and 12th straight double-digit outing. With 19 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, Robinson, the reigning ESPNW National Player of the Week, notched her third-straight double-digit scoring game and her sixth double-double of the season.
"Every time we made a run, they made a run and made a play," Georgia head coach Joni Taylor said. "We got it down to five and had a chance to score, then we picked up our dribble to make a long pass down the court and they stole it for a layup to extend the lead. Kentucky is a good team and they were playing well so you can't let them beat you to the ball and get to the free throw line 21 times."
After four lead changes in the first quarter, Robinson and Roberts accounted for all 15 Georgia points in the second quarter. Robinson led all scorers in the first half with 13 points, while Roberts followed with nine. With 2:04 remaining in the second quarter, Roberts found Robinson for a lay-up to bring the score within two, but the Wildcats extended the lead to 36-31 to end the half.
The Lady Bulldogs and the Wildcats matched each others scoring in the third quarter with a dozen points each. Kentucky led by nine with 1:43 on the clock but Georgia cut the Kentucky advantage to 48-43 on back-to-back offensive rebound and put backs by Robinson and Halle Washington.
To open the fourth quarter, Roberts scored the first seven Georgia points. The redshirt senior's three pointer at 7:11 pulled the score within five, but the Wildcats stretched their lead back to 10 points. Again, Roberts responded to make it 57-50 with a three-point play as she was fouled on a made lay-up and converted the free throw. A few minute later, Washington corralled an offensive rebound and put it back up to cut the deficit to five. However, the Lady Bulldogs were unable to overcome the Wildcats down the stretch as they secured the win.
Georgia heads to Auburn to face off with the Tigers on Sunday. The game is slated for 3 p.m. on SEC Network.
