Leah Brown to Speak to L.E.A.D. Group
October 17, 2016 | Gymnastics
ATHENS, Ga. — One of Georgia's most distinguished gymnastics alumni, Leah Brown, will address the 2017 L.E.A.D. inductees Monday night.
L.E.A.D. is a leadership academy offered through the University of Georgia. It consists of student-athletes chosen based on success in the classroom and in competition, with additional factors of leadership skills, campus and community service participation and recommendation of head coaches and academic counselors.
During her collegiate career, Brown totaled two individual NCAA titles, three SEC team championships, five SEC event crowns and 14 All-America honors as a Gymdog from 1994-97.
Her resume since her competition days has been arguably more impressive, as the Atlanta native served two tours in Afghanistan as an orthopedic doctor and received an Army Bronze Star for humanitarian efforts while she was stationed in the Tarin Kowt Forward Operating Base hospital in Afghanistan's Uruzgan province. She was the Georgia gymnastics Distinguished Alum of the Year in 2012 and was inducted into the UGA Circle of Honor in 2016.
The Gymdogs' L.E.A.D. inductees, seniors Lauren Johnson and Rachel Schick, both expressed their excitement about getting the opportunity to listen to one of the program's most accomplished alumni.
"Seriously, what an awesome person to look up to," said Johnson. "She is truly the epitome of strength and feminism combined."
Schick added, "Leah Brown is an alum that left a Gymdog legacy that no one could forget. I'm thrilled to have her speak tonight because she exhibited work ethic of a leader during her years at Georgia and continues to show the same today. The way she has gone on to help people with her influence in the medical field and be selfless to fight for her country exemplifies true leadership qualities. The legacy she left for our program and her desire to always achieve more encourages me to be the best student-athlete I can be."
