ATLANTA, Ga. --- The Georgia swimming and diving teams opened the 2012-13 season on Wednesday by sweeping Georgia Tech.
The Lady Bulldogs notched a 176-115 decision, while the Bulldogs took a 161-133 victory.
"I thought we were good and that we swam hard in a lot of places, but we also know that we have a lot of work to do," Georgia coach Jack Bauerle said. "Give Tech credit for stepping up and making it a hard-fought meet. I'd give us about a B-minus for our first meet. It was a good meet, and we knew it would be. We did a pretty good job, but we've got to get a lot better. I think our kids are training honestly; now it's a matter of competing a little more in practice, and I think that will be helpful too."
Allison Schmitt punctuated her return to collegiate swimming by winning two individual races and helping a relay post a victory. Schmitt, who redshirted last season and then won five medals at the Olympics, took the 100-yard freestyle in 50.85 and the 100-yard butterfly in 56.79. Said Schmitt, "It's good to be back."
Kelsey Gaid was also a double winner as she claimed the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.96 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:55.83.
Other winners for the Lady Bulldogs included Chantal Van Landeghem in the 50-yard freestyle (23.30), Nicole Vernon in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:10.23), Amber McDermott in the 100-yard backstroke (57.43), Melanie Margalis in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.82), Megan Molnar in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.52), Annie Zhu in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.20), Courtney Peters in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.47) and Meghan Faulkner in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.07).
The Lady Bulldogs opened the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Van Landeghem, Mangimelli, Shannon Vreeland and Megan Romano touched in 1:45.93. The 400-yard freestyle relay of Vreeland, Jessica Graber, Hali Flickinger and Schmitt had the meet's best time of 3:26.36.
Indiana transfer Laura Ryan made her Georgia debut with the highest total on the 3-meter springboard as she posted 313.50 points.
Will Freeman and Nic Fink each notched two victories for the Bulldogs. Freeman won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:31.07 and the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:19.36. Fink swept the breaststroke races, taking the 100 in 55.22 and the 200 in 2:03.93.
The Bulldogs also got wins from Jameson Hill in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.91), Ty Stewart in the 200-yard individual medley (1:50.44) and Jared Markham in the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.11).
The 400-yard freestyle relay of Hill, Matias Koski, Doug Reynolds and Matt Ellis came in first with a time of 3:02.27.
Bauerle extended his personal winning streak against the Yellow Jackets to 28-0 all-time (18-0 coaching the women, 7-0 coaching the men and 3-0 as a Georgia swimmer).
The Lady Bulldogs will be in action on Friday at Arkansas in the SEC opener. Friday's meet will begin at 3 p.m. Georgia has won 27 straight SEC meets dating back to the 2006-07 season. Georgia's home opener will be Thursday, Oct. 25, at 3 p.m., against Florida.
