ATHENS, Ga.--The Georgia women's tennis team earned the fourth-seed in the NCAA Championship tournament will play host to first and second round action at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, the NCAA announced Tuesday.
The Bulldogs (21-3) will be making their 27th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tennis Championships, ranking fifth nationally in a tie with Florida. Stanford, UCLA and California have the longest active streak at 32. Georgia is 64-24 in the NCAA Championships, including 10 trips to the National Semifinals with national titles in 1994 and 2000.
Georgia will face Winthrop (18-9) in the first round on Saturday, May 11 at 12:00 p.m. The winner will play the winner of Oklahoma (13-9) and Arizona State (16-5) on Sunday, May 12 at 2:00 p.m., Saturday's other first round match-up to be held in Athens at 9:00 a.m.
Georgia has now served a first and second rounds 12 times since the NCAA Tournament went to its current format in 1999, and are 22-0 on those matches.
Georgia is 3-0 all-time versus Winthrop, last having beaten the Eagles in 2007, 7-0 in Athens. Georgia beat Winthrop in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs are 2-0 all-time versus against Oklahoma and 2-1 all-time versus Arizona State.
Georgia is 7-5 all-time against the Cougars, last facing them in 1997, a 9-0 win. This season, Georgia posted a 7-0 win over Clemson in Athens on Feb. 26 to take a 23-19 lead in the all-time series. Georgia is 2-1 all-time against Arizona State with the Sun Devils winning the last meeting 5-4 in 1997.
"It's exciting to know that you're going to be playing your first two rounds at home," said head coach Jeff Wallace. "It's a huge honor and its great to be in your backyard playing at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. You can't overlook anyone. They've all had good years because they're in the NCAA Tournament so we're just excited to get that first one going."
The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will be posted on NCAA.com on Wednesday, May 1.
The third-seeded Georgia men's tennis team (22-4) will also play host to the NCAA first and second rounds. They will play host to Binghamton, Northwestern and Wake Forest on May 10-11. Their first match will be played on Friday at 1:00 p.m. versus Binghamton.
