Pacific Palisades, Calif.—Three Bulldogs remained in contention in the singles and doubles qualifying draws on Tuesday at the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships.
In doubles, the No. 50 tandem of Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase advanced with an 8-1 defeat of Kentucky’s Nadia Ravita and Caitlin McGraw. They will face No. 20 Jennifer Brady and Robin Anderson of UCLA in the next round. The Bulldog duo must must win two more matches to qualify for the main draw.
In singles, No. 60 Silvia Garcia beat No. 74 Danielle Collins of Virginia 7-5, 7-6(3) this morning, and then beat No. 28 Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama 6-4, 6-0 tonight. Tomorrow, the Bulldog sophomore will square off with Hayley Carter of North Carolina for a spot in the main draw.
Lilly Kimbell, who advanced from the pre-qualifying draw after three wins over the weekend, upset No. 45 Joelle Kissell of N.C. State 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, before falling to Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine, 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-1.
Part of the collegiate grand slam, the All-American Championships will host more than 200 players over a two-week period. Pre-qualifying took place over the weekend and the qualifying round will last through Wednesday. The Main Draw will begin on Thursday and last through the following weekend. Players in the qualifying draws must win three matches to advance to the next draw.
Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 8-11 in New York, N.Y.
