Highlights from Friday's action at the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championship for the Georgia Bulldogs.

May 23, 2014

ATHENS, Ga.--The second-seeded doubles duo of Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase advanced to the NCAA Doubles Quarterfinals, beating the No. 29 pair of Veronica Corning and Alicia Barnett from Northwestern, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.

They will square off with the No. 35 ranked pair of Victoria Kisialeva and Blair Shankle of Baylor on Saturday at 4 p.m.

"Maho kept us going," Herring said. "I think the longer the match went, the better it got, especially the last couple of games I was really finding my groove. Overall, I thought the last two sets were pretty good."

"We just have fun," Kowase said. "I just try to make [Lauren] smile. She's so smart and I just like helping along and having fun."

Earlier in the day, the No. 9-16 seed sophomore Silvia Garcia lost to No. 5 seed Beatrice Capra of Duke, 7-6(4), 6-2. Garcia ends her sophomore campaign with a 37-8 singles mark.

Georgia has had three NCAA individual singles champions: Lisa Spain in 1984, Angela Lettiere in 1994 and Chelsey Gullickson in 2010. Shannan McCarthy was the runner-up in 1992. No Georgia pairing has ever won the NCAA doubles championship, but Bulldog teams have reached the finals four times, including Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist in 2012.
