KAZAN, Russia --- Former Georgia soccer goalkeeper Ashley Baker registered her third shutout of the tournament to lead Great Britain into the finals of the World University Games with today’s 1-0 win over Brazil in the semifinal round.
The squad will take on Mexico – which beat South Africa 4-1 today – on Monday for the gold medal.
After graduating from UGA following last season, Baker made her professional debut with Sky Blue FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in early June. She was the 20th overall pick in the league’s college draft in January, selected in the third round. As a senior for UGA last fall, she posted 112 saves and recorded five shutouts in 19 starts and 1,786 minutes of action. She concluded her career with 305 career saves – fourth all-time.
Baker’s international resume includes a call-up to the England Senior National Team in December of 2012, which included a trip to La Manga, Spain as the team geared up for the 2013 UEFA Women’s Championships. She has experience with the England U23 team and played with the U20s in the Women’s World Cup in both 2008 and 2010.
