ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia's Kailey Walsh was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week in women's golf by the league office in Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday.
Last week, Walsh placed fifth individually at the LSU Golf Classic in Baton Rouge, La., and was the only freshman among the top-10 individuals at that event. She finished the 54-hole event at 7-over 223. On Saturday, Walsh fired a 5-under 67, a career-low loop and also equaling the third-best round in Georgia Golf history. That also was the low tally of all 79 golfers in the field during the three-day event.
Walsh, the younger sister of former Georgia All-America and current Minnesota Viking All-Pro placekicker Blair Walsh, was Georgia's top individual finisher for the second straight event. She was was 22nd at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate two weeks earlier.
Walsh has enjoyed a steady spring. She notched her first career top-20 effort at the FSU Match-Up Tournament, where she tied for 18th. Walsh's spring stroke average of 75.11 is a full shot per round better than her fall average.
Walsh and the Georgia's women's golf team will wrap up their 2012-13 regular-season schedule this weekend when they compete in the Bryan National Collegiate in Browns Summit, N.C., on Friday through Sunday.
