Highlights from day one's action for the Georgia Bulldogs at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens.
April 4, 2014
ATHENS, Ga. --- Manuela Carbajo Ré's fired a 1-under 71 to lead the Georgia women's golf team in the stroke play portion of the 42nd Annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Friday. Carbajo Ré finished sixth in the individual field. The Bulldogs posted a 308 as a team, tying for 11th.
Georgia's additional counting scores were a 76 from Amira Alexander, a 79 from Amelia Hill and an 82 from Sammi Lee. Overall, Alexander tied for 30th, Hill tied for 51st, Lee tied for 67th and Harang Lee, who shot 83, tied for 72nd.
"It was a very good round by Manuela," head coach Josh Brewer said. "She's been practicing really well. She was close at our last two tournaments - the Darius Rucker and the Sugar Bowl - to turning in really good tournaments. She just continues to get better, which we need."
Carbajo Ré posted a dozen consecutive pars before her lone bogey of the day on No. 13. Following three more pars, she finished birdie-birdie to reach red numbers for the fourth time this season.
"It was good to see Amira back up her play at the John Kirk with a solid round," Brewer added. "She was probably a couple of putts away from a top-15 finish, but it definitely was a step in the right direction for her."
Earlier this week, Alexander shot 2-under 214 over 54 holes to tie for first place at the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate before falling in a three-golfer playoff for medalist honors.
Saturday, the Liz Murphey will move to two eight-team match play brackets. Georgia will be the No. 3 seed in the "Black" bracket. The Bulldogs will face Troy in the first round, teeing off from No. 10 beginning at 8:30 a.m. A second round of match play will be contested beginning at 1:30 p.m.
"With match play, it's just person-on-person and you just try to win the hole," Brewer said. "You might need to make a 2. You might need to make a 6. You just have the mindset to win that hole and get that point for us. We're in this to win three matches over the next two days and get ready for SECs."
On Friday, Hana Lee of Northwestern and Gaby Lopez of Arkansas both equaled the tournament record with a pair of 6-under 66s. That ties the 6-under efforts of Alabama's Jennifer Kirby in 2012 and Duke's Brittany Lang in 2004.
Lee's loop led an impressive showing by the Wildcats. Northwestern golfers also finished fourth, fifth and ninth en route to a tournament-record 11-under 277. That was a stroke better than the Liz Murphey 10-under record set by Alabama in 2012 and Duke in 2000. Northwestern was just a shot shy of the UGA Course record established by Southern Cal in the second round of last spring's NCAA Championships.
The Liz Murphey adopted this year's event as a precursor to the 2015 NCAA Championships' shift to a similar format combining stroke play and match play.
