ATHENS, Ga.--- The Georgia men's and women's basketball fans got their first look at the 2013-14 versions of the two teams Friday night at Stegeman Coliseum.
The second annual edition of the `Basketbash' event was held on the court of Stegeman Coliseum and gave Bulldog basketball fans an opportunity to have posters signed by both teams on the arena concourse before moving into the arena for various basketball and entertainment activities.
These events included the return of the popular `Simon Sez' to the Stegeman Coliseum floor, a pregame pep rally, the official introduction of the 2013-14 teams, a three-point challenge for the women's team, a dunk contest for the men's team, a women's team scrimmage, and a men's team scrimmage.
The much anticipated slam dunk contest created a lot of excitement prior to Friday evening and the three combatants lived up to the hype. Senior Donte' Williams, sophomore Kenny Gaines, and freshman Kenny Paul Geno were the contestants, displaying an array of athletic attempts that thrilled the crowd.
This was the second `Basketbash' event that celebrates the beginning of practice for both teams, and begins the countdown to the beginning of their respective seasons. Officially the men opened Friday, Sept. 27, and the women began Tuesday Oct. 1.
The event proved popular with both sets of players.
"It was a lot of fun. The walk out, just the entrance with the smoke blowing was pretty cool," said Lady Bulldogs sophomore guard Shacobia Barbee. "The atmosphere in general was extremely fun, you felt the energy all throughout the gym. Just being able to be out there and play in front of our fans is great."
Junior forward Nemanja Djurisic said that part of the thrill was both teams debuting their brand new jerseys, featuring the iconic new `Bulldog Bold' font developed by Nike exclusively for the University of Georgia.
"It was great, everyone was very excited to put the new jerseys on and then we really had fun," he said. "I think fans get to enjoy the prizes and compete a little bit, get the chance to meet us up close and we really enjoy it. We're really grateful for all the fans that come here."
The men's team begins the fourth season of the Mark Fox era with an exhibition at
Stegeman Coliseum against UNC Pembroke on Nov. 4, at P.M. They will begin the regular season at home against Wofford on Nov. 8, at 7.30 P.M.
On the women's side, the Lady Bulldogs begin Andy Landers' 35th year at the helm with six straight home games beginning with Presbyterian on Nov. 10, at 2 P.M.
