ATHENS ----- As many as 13 of Georgia’s 30 regular-season games will come against teams that played in the 2013 postseason, according to the complete 2013-14 men’s basketball schedule, announced today by head coach Mark Fox.
Georgia begins pre-season practice on Friday, Sept. 27, reflecting a new NCAA rule that allows teams to conduct 30 practice days over six weeks before the season opener. Two weeks later on Oct. 11, the Bulldogs will introduce themselves in the second annual “Basketbash” event at Stegeman Coliseum. More details on the 2013 edition of Basketbash will follow as the event draws nearer.
Other noteworthy features of the schedule include an appearance in the popular Charleston Classic tournament in November, during which the Bulldogs will face 2-time Southern Conference champ Davidson in the first round on Nov. 21. They’ll complete a home-and-home series against George Washington with a Jan. 3 game in the nation’s capital. They’ll start another series with Pac-12 foe Colorado, another NCAA Tournament team from 2013, in a Dec. 28 contest in Boulder. Georgia recently completed a series against the Buffs in the 2011-12 seasons.
“I’m very excited about the schedule we have put together,” Fox said. “I think we will have the Strength of Schedule we need from the non-league portion. We’re looking forward to playing in the Charleston Classic against a terrific program in Davidson in the first round. And we wanted to start a ‘high-major’ series this season and we filled that need with Colorado.”
The Bulldogs will tip off their SEC schedule Jan. 8 at Missouri. The Tigers, NCAA Tournament participants last season, will make their first-ever trip to Athens as an SEC team when they visit Stegeman Coliseum on Feb. 25. Georgia’s league schedule, adjusted to accommodate the 2013 expansion, will not include the trio of Kentucky, Florida and Tennessee at home for the first time in 26 years. Kentucky has played in Athens every year since 1988, Florida since 1962 and Tennessee since 1964. Additionally, the Bulldogs will not play at Vanderbilt for the first time since 1964.
“The SEC will continue to be very competitive and very balanced this season,” Fox said. “Certainly, we’re disappointed that three of our traditional rivals will not be coming to Athens this season. I think everyone’s a little frustrated with the (SEC schedule) rotation, but at the same time we recognize that it comes with the expansion of our league.”
Season tickets, which include a reserved seat to all 16 regular-season home games, are $225 and on sale now. Season tickets for UGA faculty and staff are also on sale and are $112.50.
