ATHENS-----Ten Georgia Bulldogs are participating in summer baseball wood-bat leagues across the country. Here’s a quick glance at how they are doing with their respective clubs.
Cape Cod Baseball League: Rising juniors Hunter Cole and Jared Walsh are teammates for the Cotuit (Mass.) Kettleers. Cole has appeared in 21 games, and he is batting .254 with one home run, four doubles and six RBI. Walsh is 0-1 with a 0.43 ERA in six games including three starts. Cotuit is 14-10.
Cole was one of two Bulldogs to start all 53 games last season, and he ranked second on the team in home runs and RBI, batting .303-4-33. Walsh was a two-way standout. He hit .297-3-26 in 47 games and was 2-4 with a 3.35 ERA and three saves in 17 appearances including five starts.
New England Collegiate Baseball League: Rising sophomores Daniel Nichols and David Sosebee are teammates for the Keene (N.H.) Swamp Bats. Nichols has played in 16 games with a .241 batting average, two home runs, three doubles and 10 RBI. Sosebee is 1-1 with a 4.30 ERA in four games including three starts. Keene is 10-12.
Nichols ended the 2013 campaign as the regular first baseman for the Bulldogs and batted .230-3-15 while Sosebee was redshirted.
New York Collegiate Baseball League: Rising juniors Luke Crumley, Heath Holder and Brandon Stephens are teammates with the Oneonta Outlaws who are 16-10. Crumley and Stephens were All-Star selections, and Crumley pitched one inning in his team’s victory this past Tuesday in Geneva, N.Y. Crumley is 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA in five games including four starts covering 27 innings. Stephens is batting .284 with five doubles, one triple and five RBI in 18 games. Also, he has made four appearances on the mound for a total of 5.1 innings with no runs allowed, two walks and eight strikeouts. Holder has been a two-way contributor this summer too. In 19 games, he is batting .224 with two doubles, one triple and 11 RBI while posting a 0-0 mark, 4.90 ERA in six relief appearances. In 11 innings, he has one walk and 12 strikeouts.
Crumley made six starts and appeared in 12 games for the Bulldogs last year, going 1-4 with an 8.23 ERA. Holder saw action as a pitcher early last season and ended the year as an outfielder. He batted .211 in nine games and went 0-1 on the mound. Stephens, a two-year starter, took a redshirt season in 2013 while recovering from elbow surgery.
Northwoods Baseball League: Rising sophomore Mike Mancuso and junior Zack Waters are pitching for the Battle Creek (Mich.) Bombers who are 17-26. Mancuso is 1-1 with a 2.28 ERA in four starts including 14 strikeouts and only three walks in 19.2 innings. Waters spent the month of June with the club and went 0-2 with an 8.10 ERA in six games, all in relief for a total of 6.2 innings.
Mancuso emerged late in the season as an elite reliever for the Bulldogs, going 1-1 with a 3.14 ERA in 17 appearances. Waters sat out the 2013 season due to NCAA rules as a transfer after beginning his career at East Tennessee State.
Great Lakes Baseball League: Rising sophomore Jess Posey is playing for the Lima (Ohio) Locos, and they are 11-8. Posey is batting .115 with two doubles and one RBI in nine games. Posey wound up playing in 30 games for the Bulldogs last year, making 16 starts, batting .297-2-12.
The 2013 fall semester at UGA begins Monday, Aug. 12.
