ATHENS-----The Bulldogs return to SEC action Friday at 7 p.m. at Foley Field when they face 14th-ranked Arkansas for the start of a three-game set. The Razorbacks own an NCAA-leading 1.81 ERA. Saturday's game will be a 12:07 p.m. start and be televised by SportSouth while Sunday's game is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. on CSS.
Last week in the SEC, Georgia went 1-2 against #2 Vanderbilt in Athens while the Razorbacks went 2-1 against Texas A&M in Fayetteville. Georgia is coming off a historic rout of its biggest rival, a 17-0 victory over #20 Ga. Tech Tuesday at Turner Field, the margin of victory over Tech was the largest since 1899. Tuesday's tilt featured the largest crowd in college baseball this season as 18,240 watched Georgia crush Tech. Arkansas (27-15, 11-7 SEC) was slated to play Oklahoma Tuesday but the game was cancelled due to bad weather.
The Bulldogs (16-26, 4-14 SEC), under the direction of David Perno, have won four of their last six games including two over ranked opponents. Now, they face Dave Van Horn's Razorbacks who were preseason ranked number one. In the series history, Arkansas leads 26-20. The last time Arkansas came to Foley Field was 2009, and Georgia took the series 2-1 plus posted a 2-1 win in 10 innings at the 2009 SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala. In 2010, Georgia was swept at Baum Stadium. The teams did not play in 2011, and last year, the Bulldogs went back to Fayetteville, and the Razorbacks claimed the series 2-1 after Georgia notched game one.
Did You Know? The first meeting between Georgia and Arkansas came at the 1987 College World Series in Omaha, Neb. The Razorbacks posted a 5-4 win. The clubs did not play again until Arkansas joined the SEC in 1992. Recently, Coach Van Horn was selected as the manager for the 2014 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Georgia senior Kyle Farmer served as the starting shortstop for the 2012 USA Team under Dave Serrano (Tennessee) that went 12-5 and earned a bronze medal at the Honkbal Week event in the Netherlands. Also, they went 2-3 during a trip to Cuba, the first by USA Baseball since 1996. One of Farmer's USA teammates, Arkansas pitcher Ryne Stanek, is slated to start Saturday against the Bulldogs.
