ATHENS----Georgia plays host to #20 Ga. Tech (23-9) Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. on CSS and then travels to Auburn (19-13, 3-9 SEC) for an SEC series starting Friday.
On Tuesday, Georgia will start freshman RHP David Gonzalez (1-2, 7.63 ERA). He is coming off his best outing of his career, a win over KSU on April 2 when he pitched a career-high four shutout innings. Georgia went 2-2 last week, beating Kennesaw State 2-1 on the road and then dropping an SEC home series to Missouri. Tech will counter with freshman LHP Jonathan King (2-2, 3.60 ERA).Overall, Georgia is batting .276 with a 4.64 ERA and fielding .975. Tech is batting.328 with a 3.64 ERA and fielding .976.
Georgia’s leading hitter is All-SEC senior third baseman Curt Powell. He is batting .373 with 15 RBI and fielding .933. In SEC action, Powell is batting .362 and fielding .957. Georgia’s top RBI man is senior shortstop Kyle Farmer with 33. He is batting .310 and fielding an impressive .976. In SEC games, Farmer is batting .286 and fielding .984. For his career, Farmer has made 191 starts at shortstop and owns a .967 fielding percentage in 941 total chances.
Junior pitcher Dylan Cole (0-0, 3.00 ERA, 3 SV) is 3-for-4 in save opportunities since moving in to the closer role at the end of March. He earned his first save as a Bulldog in the 7-6 road win over #8 Kentucky on March 30 . This past week, he went 2-for-3 in save chances, picking one up against Kennesaw State and Missouri. On Sunday, he had his first blown save after coming in with the bases loaded, nobody out and a 2-0 count on the batter. Cole had 10 saves in a two-year career at Furman before transferring to UGA in 2012. Cole’s younger brother, Hunter, is a sophomore starting outfielder for the Bulldogs batting .278-3-20.
Junior LHP/OF Jared Walsh became the first Bulldog in more than a decade to start a game as the pitcher/dh when he did it this past Sunday against Missouri. He made his first career start on the mound after 12 relief appearances this season plus has 23 starts in right field and four as a DH. For the year, Walsh is batting .312-2-15 and is 1-3 with a 2.95 ERA and three saves.
Did You Know? On Friday, the Jackie Robinson film “42” opens in theaters, and three former Bulldogs are in the picture. Outfielder Jasha Balcom (2003) is the stunt double for Chadwick Boseman who plays Jackie Robinson. Infielder David Thoms (2008-09) plays St. Louis Cardinal Enos Slaughter while pitcher Barry Fowler (1998-99) is an extra.
Series With Tech
Since 1950, Georgia leads the all-time series over Tech 112-97. Last year, Georgia posted a 7-1 win over Tech in Athens in front of a season-high crowd of 3,004 while the Yellow Jackets claimed the other two games 8-6 in Atlanta and 4-3 at Turner Field. Tech is coached by Danny Hall. They were among the national leaders in batting but have struggled since leading hitter Brandon Thomas (.441-1-16) has been out this month due to an illness. This past weekend, they were shut out twice by Duke (2-0 and 3-0) and avoided a sweep by winning Saturday 2-1. Tech is 17-3 at home and 6-6 on the road. Tech’s starting pitcher will be freshman LHP Jonathan King (2-2, 3.60 ERA). Junior catcher Zane Evans leads the offense at .345-10-38 while junior outfielder Kyle Wren is batting .391-2-19 and is 18-for-28 in stolen bases.
