ATHENS-----University of Georgia pitcher Robert Tyler has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Monday.
A 6-4, 210-pound native of Cordele, Ga., Tyler pitched eight scoreless innings for his first career SEC win as the Bulldogs clinched a series over No. 22 Texas A&M this past Saturday. Tyler did not walk a batter, scattered seven singles and registered six strikeouts.
Overall, Tyler (2-2) leads the club with a 1.54 Earned Run Average in eight appearances including five starts. In 41 innings pitched, he has 27 strikeouts and seven walks. Opponents are batting .184 against him. Tyler has a 2.08 ERA in three SEC starts, and they have all been against top 25 opponents.
Earlier this month, Tyler earned the SEC honor for the first time in his career after pitching a total of nine scoreless innings against Georgia Tech and Western Carolina.
The Bulldogs (16-12-1 overall, 3-5-1 SEC) return to action Friday at Missouri (13-13 overall, 3-6 SEC). Game one will start at 7 p.m. EDT. Tyler's next start will be Saturday afternoon against the Tigers.
