SACRAMENTO, Ca. --- Junior Nick Vena finished sixth in the shot put qualifying at the USA Championships in Sacramento to join former Bulldog Reese Hoffa in the event finals later Wednesday.
Vena, a native of Whippany, N.J., opened with a throw of 64 feet, 4 ½ inches, which ended up clinching his spot since the 12th and final qualifier had a mark of 63-1.50. The 2014 outdoor First Team All-American worked up to a third throw of 65-3.50 to take sixth with the third-best meet of his career.
Hoffa, who has won the USA Outdoor Championships three times, been second four times and won the country's indoor title twice, answered an opening foul with the second-longest throw of the competition. Hoffa's mark of 66-4.50 finished only behind Nike's Kurtis Roberts, who qualified automatically with a toss of 67-9.75 on his first try.
The finals are scheduled for 9:15 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The shot put competition has been contested on the grounds of the California State Capitol.
