Freshman Freya Jones

ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia freshman Freya Jones has been named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Freshman of the Week following her performance at the Drake Relays, according to a league announcement.
This is the ninth SEC weekly honor that the Lady Bulldogs have won this year. The Georgia women have garnered three of the SEC Women’s Freshman of the Week awards this outdoor season.
Jones, a native of Chandlers Ford, Hampshire, U.K., launched her fourth try in the javelin a personal-best distance of 173 feet, 9 inches to earn runner-up honors at the Drake Relays. This is the fifth-best throw in the nation this year and ranks second in the SEC.
Jones also shot from seventh to fourth on the school’s all-time top-10 list with the longest throw for the Lady Bulldogs since 2009. The true freshman, who also had a mark of 173-6 in her series, is trying to become the first Georgia woman to be a First Team All-American in the event since 2007 (Krista Woodward).
Georgia begins the postseason at the SEC Championships in Columbia, Mo., as the teams compete from May 9-12.
