EUGENE, Ore. --- Georgia true freshman Leontia Kallenou reached a personal-best height in the high jump to finish fourth during the last day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., on Saturday.
Kallenou safely cleared the bar at 6 feet, 1 ¼ inches on her second attempt to take over the No. 4 spot in the Lady Bulldog record books. Georgia finished with four scorers as freshman Freya Jones won the javelin title, freshman Shaunae Miller was second in the 400-meter dash and senior Lucie Ondraschkova took seventh in the heptathlon.
In the team race, the Lady Bulldogs scored 25 points to tie for 11th with Florida. Kansas (60) won its first title on the track while Texas A&M (44), Oregon (43), LSU (40) and UCF (35) rounded out the top five.
This marks the best finish for the Georgia women since they took ninth in 2007 with 24 points. The Lady Bulldogs' 25 points is the most since they scored 25.75 to take ninth in 2006.
The Georgia men finished in a nine-way tie for 49th place with four points. Texas A&M (53) and Florida (53) were crowned co-champions while Arkansas (46.50), Oregon (44) and USC (42) make up the next three finishers.
The Bulldogs had their best finish in three seasons after tying for 64th in 2012.
"The meet didn't go how we thought it would go since we had a lot of downs starting out and along the way," said head coach Wayne Norton. "It was a typical championship meet with a lot of good and a lot of bad mixed in there. It was good to score some points in the final event of the day. We kind of got them a different way than we thought we would with the freshman coming through.
"It was an overall good meet for us, especially when you consider the newcomers. Freshmen scored a large percentage of our points, which means the future should remain bright for us. But we have to do a better job with the people we have and to keep them healthy. We need for them to compete on the day it counts the most. We have some things to work on and I would say we are not at all satisfied with where we are. We are happy to have had some success out here and hope to have much more in the future."
Kallenou was one of the unexpected highlights for Georgia over the last week. The Nicosia, Cyprus, native posted first attempt clearances at her first three heights to be one of 15 to advance. Then, Kallenou soared over the bar at 6 feet followed up by a career best 6-1.25 on her second attempt at each height to finish fourth.
This finale to the Lady Bulldogs' meet gave them five more points and held them at 11th place. Kallenou is the second Georgia woman to score in the high jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in as many years after Saniel Atkinson-Grier tied for sixth in the 2012.
This year, Atkinson-Grier passed at the first height and then cleared 5-9.75 on her opening attempt. But that would be the senior's last clearance during the final collegiate meet of her career. She ends up as the 2013 SEC outdoor champion, a three-time conference runner-up and a 2012 NCAA outdoor First Team All-American.
