Georgia Returns Home With Texas Tech Defeat
September 14, 2017 | Volleyball
ATHENS, Ga – The Georgia volleyball team (9-3) returned home on Thursday after eight consecutive road matches to defeat the Texas Tech Red Raiders in four sets 26-28, 25-12, 25-21, 25-22 at the Ramsey Center.
Freshmen T'ara Ceasar and Rachel Ritchie each claimed a double-double apiece in kills and digs. Ceasar led the team with a career-high 23 kills and 19 digs on the match, while Ritchie notched her second 20-kill match in a week with 11 digs. After becoming the first pair to have 18 or more kills in the same match since 2012 on Friday against Davidson, Ceasar and Ritchie topped their previous performance against Texas Tech (8-2).
"We've been playing three matches in 48 hours this past month, so the fact that we get to sleep in our own bed, and we have 24 hours before the game is actually a little bit easier than what we've been doing," head coach Tom Black said.
After falling behind 6-1 in the first set, Georgia came out of the timeout and scored six of the following seven points. A kill from senior outside hitter Amanda Dachs, who had a season-high 12 on the night, knotted the opening set at 10. The two teams traded points back-and-forth, but the Red Raiders outlasted Georgia 28-26.
Georgia responded to the first set defeat with a 7-3 lead in the second, capped by a Cassidy Anderson ace. The Bulldogs extended their advantage by as many as 13 points as the they cruised to a 25-12 set victory, hitting .432 as a team.
In the third set, Texas Tech commanded the next run 9-3, but Georgia re-claimed the lead with seven unanswered points of its own. A Donovan ace, paired with a T'ara Ceasar kill, secured a 13-11 Georgia margin, as the Red Raiders were unable to contest the Bulldog lead in the remaining set.
The Bulldogs closed out Texas Tech in the fourth set 25-22 to secure their undefeated record at home.
In its final match before SEC play, the Georgia volleyball team will be back in action tomorrow night at the Ramsey Center as the Bulldogs take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-5) at 7 p.m. on the SEC Network +.
