ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia volleyball team will conclude its 2011 season at Auburn on Wednesday.
Georgia enters its final match of the year with an 11-18 overall record and 7-12 Southeastern Conference mark. The Bulldogs are guaranteed to finish with at least of tie for sixth place in the final SEC standings and can take the sixth spot outright with a victory over Auburn (10-19, 4-15 SEC). First serve between the Bulldogs and Tigers is slated for 6 p.m. ET.
No. 14 Tennessee has clinched at least a share of the 2011 SEC title with an 18-1 league record and cane win the crown outright with a win against No. 16 Kentucky (17-2 SEC) on Wednesday. The Wildcats would gain a share of the title with a victory over the Lady Volunteers. No. 17 Florida sits third in the league standing at 16-3 following by LSU (11-8 SEC) and Arkansas (10-9 SEC). Mississippi State concluded its season at 7-13 and would share the sixth spot with Georgia with an Auburn win. Ole Miss (6-13 SEC) also has a chance to share the sixth spot should Auburn win and the Rebels defeat Alabama on Friday.
The Bulldogs match against the Tigers will be the final collegiate match for four Georgia seniors – Ann Dylla, Kathleen Gates, Elizabeth Reid and Carla Tietz. Dylla and Gates have started and played in every set of their careers, and on Wednesday, will move into the top 10 all-time at Georgia in sets played. Gates ranks third in school history with 4,641 career assists, Dylla ranks third in career blocks assists (412) and fourth in career total blocks (455) and Tietz ranks second all-time at UGA with 1,473 digs. Reid, who joined the program as a transfer in 2010, has amassed 172 kills and 96 blocks in her two years as a Bulldog.
Georgia will be facing Auburn for a second time this season. In the first meeting in Athens on Oct. 5, the Bulldogs earned a 3-1 victory with set scores of 19-25, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-19. All-time, UGA leads the series 32-11.
