ATHENS, Ga. – Deborah Hughes Pike (formally Deborah Hughes) transferred to the Georgia volleyball program as a defensive specialist in the fall of 1979 after playing her freshman year at Northern Illinois.
A native of Marietta, Ga., Pike decided to return to her home state for the remainder of her collegiate career because she had an opportunity to join a Georgia program that was “really gearing up at the time.”
Pike now resides in Marietta and owns a marketing company called New Eyes/Better Marketing (neweyesinc.com) that specializes in restaurant branding and marketing. She has been married to Chris Pike for 26 years, and the couple has four children: Taylor (24 years old and a UGA graduate), Meghan (21 years old and a student at Kansas State), Jordan (15 years) and Tyler (13).
In addition to playing volleyball while at Georgia from 1979-81, Pike also was involved in Greek life as a member of the Chi Omega sorority. Several other fond memories off the court from her undergraduate years include football games and being around the wide variety of music that Athens has to offer. Pike and her family still return to Athens several times each year to cheer on the Bulldogs at football games.
Pike feels that her time at UGA not only allowed her to create new experiences and meet a variety of new people, but also to help prepare her for a career in marketing.
“I was pursuing an education degree when (UGA) Athletic Director’s Vince Dooley and Liz Murphy put my name on a list of athletes to be interviewed on campus by P&G,” said Pike. “At the time, P&G recruited athletes regardless of their degree because they fit a competitive profile that they were looking for in new sales managers. I was offered the job and began working in Birmingham, Ala., selling Folger’s Coffee just two weeks after my graduation. I have had the opportunity to thank Coach Dooley for this chance many times, as it launched my marketing career.”
Pike most remembers the hard work and the lasting friendships that evolved as a result of her time with the Georgia volleyball program, and she feels that her athletic experience at UGA not only helped her to launch her career, but also taught her the critical importance of teamwork.
“The Georgia volleyball tradition and legacy today is stronger than ever, and I just feel proud to have played even a small role,” said Pike.
