ATHENS, Ga. - Gray skies and rainy weather conditions were no deterrent for the University of Georgia volleyball team as the Bulldogs took a break from preseason practice to make some new friends in the Athens community by going on a Bulldog Scavenger Hunt.
“I had a great time running around Athens with Maggie and Chloe trying to get as many people to take pictures with us as we could,” Allison Summers said. “We made some great friends with the Aderhold staff and welcomed some new students on Milledge Avenue. Starting the hunt in a complete downpour was an interesting way to begin, but it was a fun competition within our team on our afternoon away from the gym.”
Dividing into five teams of three, the ladies embarked on a citywide journey to take pictures with as many of the iconic bulldog statues as possible. The teams were awarded points for each statue they managed to capture and received additional awards for including passerby fans in their photos. Ultimately, it was the team made up of Summers, Chloe Buckendahl and Maggie Baumert that took home the title of Bulldog Scavenger Hunt Champions.
The team was also encouraged to find new followers for Georgia volleyball’s official Twitter account (@UGAvolleyball), and used the fun-filled event to meet some new fans on the streets of Athens. Altogether, it served as a good bonding experience for both the players and members of the local community.
“We got the first look at the competitive nature of this 2013 group today,” Head Coach Lizzy Stemke said. “We were able to see all personalities at work today and we hope we have maybe picked up a few new fans in the Athens community as well!"
Even if you didn’t catch the team on the streets today, the Bulldogs can still be followed on Twitter (@UGAvolleyball) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/GeorgiaVolleyball), and will be in action later this month when they host Lipscomb for the season-opener on Aug. 30, at 7 p.m.
