Herring, Gemmell, Vreeland Named Academic All-Americans

ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia tennis player Lauren Herring and swimmers Andrew Gemmell and Shannon Vreeland have been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Division I At-Large teams.

Gemmell was chosen for the Second Team for the men, while Vreeland and Herring made the Third Team for the women.

Herring, a rising junior from Greenville, N.C., earned All-America honors on the court and in the classroom for the first time in her career. She carries a 3.90 GPA as a double major in Sociology and Psychology. This past season, Herring went 38-7 and had a final ranking of seventh in singles, plus she was 30-10 in doubles, including 13-2 at No. 2 with Majo Kowase. Herring previously was named an ITA Scholar Athlete and was chosen to the SEC and UGA academic honor rolls.

Gemmell, a rising senior from Wilmington, Del., has a 3.94 grade point average in Economics. He was named UGA's Joel Eaves Award winner as the Bulldog senior with the highest GPA for all sports and was chosen as the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for swimming and diving. Gemmell previously earned spots on the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team and the SEC and UGA honor rolls. Gemmell scored in the 1,650 freestyle at the NCAAs as the Bulldogs came in 10th. Last summer, Gemmell placed ninth in the 1,500 freestyle at the London Olympics. 

Vreeland, a rising senior from Overland Park, Kansas, boasts a 3.84 GPA while majoring in Economics and International Affairs. She previously was named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team and to the SEC and UGA honor rolls. Vreeland helped the Lady Bulldogs win the program's fifth NCAA title in March and the 10th SEC title in February. She was on the 800 freestyle relay that set the American, U.S. Open and NCAA records, and she was on the 400 freestyle relay that eclipsed the U.S. Open and NCAA standards. Last summer, Vreeland won an Olympic gold medal as a member of the 800 freestyle relay.
