ATHENS, Ga.---Georgia will serve as one of the 15 host sites of an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend next January, and on Thursday the Bulldogs learned which three teams will make the trip here to compete in the event.
The Bulldogs, who ended the 2014 season ranked fourth nationally, were selected to host by virtue of finishing the year in the top-15 of the ITA team poll. Georgia will play host to No. 27 Auburn, No. 61 Wake Forest, and No. 65 Samford at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility from Jan. 24-25, 2015.
Georgia is the No. 1 seed here, followed by Auburn, Wake Forest, and Samford, respectively. The Nos. 1 and 4 seeds and the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds will meet in the first round with the two winners to play a deciding second round match the following day, with a bid to the prestigious ITA National Team Indoor Championships on the line. In all, 60 teams are competing for a place in the National Team Indoors hosted by the University of Virginia from Feb. 6-9. The host Cavaliers will receive an automatic bid, leaving 15 spots available for each regional winner to complete the 16-team field.
The Bulldogs have played in the National Team Indoors 24 times and have won it thrice (1994, ’95 and 2002) and have reached the finals thrice (2001, ’04 and ’09). The 16-team tournament began in 1988, and in 2009, the field expanded to 60 teams with first and second round action scattered across the country as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Georgia will be an early round host site for the sixth time in 2015.
Also of note, the Georgia men’s team will play host to an ITA Kickoff event Jan. 23-25 with No. 52 Elon, No. 57 Utah and No. 62 Michigan State in the field. The men’s team has won the National Team Indoors twice (2006, ’07).
