ATHENS, Ga.—The Georgia women's tennis team improved to No. 6 in the latest rankings released Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Bulldogs went 1-1 last weekend and enter this week’s SEC Tournament as the No. 3 seed.
Georgia (18-4, 11-2) also has four singles players and four doubles pairs currently ranked.
Junior Lauren Herring headlines the Georgia contingent at No. 7. Herring is 27-4 this season, and riding a nine-match winning streak. Sophomore Silvia Garcia and senior Maho Kowase came in at Nos. 17 and 18, respectively. Garcia is 31-6 this year including 9-4 against ranked opponents. Kowase is a team-best 33-5 and on a five-match winning streak. Lilly Kimbell rounds out Georgia's ranked singles players at the No. 83 spot.
In doubles, the duo of Maho Kowase and Lauren Herring remained at the No. 2 spot. The tandem of Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia moved up to the No. 27 position, having gone undefeated in conference play during an 11-match winning streak. Senior Lilly Kimbell and sophomore Mia King are ranked No. 55 while Kimbell and freshman Caroline Brinson are ranked No. 90.
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday in the 2014 SEC Tournament in Columbia, Mo. Georgia will be going for its seventh tournament title and its first since 2009.
