ATHENS, Ga.—Georgia women’s tennis player Lauren Herring has been named SEC Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Herring went 2-0 in both singles and doubles, including three top-ten wins to help Georgia win three matches last week, beating conference-rival South Carolina, No. 5 Virginia and No. 3 Florida.
On Wednesday against Virginia, the Greenville, N.C. native beat Julia Elbaba of Virginia, 6-4, 6-4. On Sunday against No. 3 Florida, Herring topped No. 8 Olivia Janowicz 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles, Herring and partner Maho Kowase went 2-0 against two top-25 opponents. The duo clinched a critical doubles point against No. 9 Julia Elbaba and Rachel Pierson of Virginia, 8-6 and shutout No. 24 Belinda Woolcock and Sofie Oyen of Florida, 8-0.
Herring, who is the No. 10 singles player in the country, is 24-3 this year, including 15 wins over ranked opponents. She is riding a six-match winning streak. In doubles, she and Kowase are ranked third in the country and have a team-best 25-4 record.
This is the second time that Herring has won SEC Player of the Week honors this spring.
