The Georgia duo beat two-time champions and second-seeded Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria of Southern California, 8-3. Herring and Kowase will try to punch its ticket to the national finals tomorrow at 9 a.m. versus Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine of Louisville.
In singles, freshman Silvia Garcia advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-1 win against UNLV's Lucia Batta, but later was upended by second-seeded Robin Anderson of UCLA, 6-1, 6-2. Garcia finished her fall campaign with a 13-2 record, including seven wins over ranked opponents. Maho Kowase lost in her first match of the day to Jenny Jullien of St. Mary's, 6-4, 6-3. Kowase finished her fall season with a 13-3 mark.
In the consolation singles draw, Lauren Herring overwhelmed Baylor's Kiah Generette, 6-0, 6-2. She will play tomorrow at 11 a.m.
Georgia players have four titles in program history. Former Bulldog All-American Agata Cioroch captured a pair of ITA National Indoor titles in 2002-03. In doubles, All-Americans Michelle Anderson and Angela Lettiere won it in 1994 and All-Americans Vanessa Castellano and Marissa Catlin claimed the 1999 title.
Georgia is one of 21 schools represented in the women's singles draw and one of only three teams with three players represented in the draw.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serve as the culmination of the fall college tennis season. The championship features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women. For updated results and draws, click here.
