FLUSHING, N.Y.-----University of Georgia senior Chelsey Gullickson cruised in to the round of 16 at the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Thursday in New York.
The ninth-ranked Gullickson dispatched 29th-ranked Natalie Pluskota (Tennessee) 6-1,6-3. Gullickson extended her current winning streak to 10 and moved her record to 14-1 this fall. On Friday, Gullickson will face 26th-ranked Joanna Mather (Florida) at 12:30 p.m.. Mather rallied past 89th-ranked Sam Vickers (Tulsa) 3-6,7-5,7-6(4) in her first round match.
"It's definitely different coming in from playing outdoors to indoors," said Gullickson. "The courts here are a little different. I went out there with the mindset to keep making balls until I got a feel of the court. I have not had good results at the indoors the last three years, this was my first win here. Every match is going to be tough from here on out. I got to stay hydrated and keep playing my game."
Gullickson defeated Mather in their last meeting coming a couple of weeks ago at the ITA Southeast Regional on the Gators home courts. She posted a 6-0,6-1 win in the quarterfinals.
In the first round of doubles Thursday, the Bulldog duo of Gullickson and sophomore Lilly Kimbell fell 8-2 to fifth-ranked Kristy Frilling and Shannon Matthews (Notre Dame). The Georgia tandem now drops to the consolation bracket where they will play Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane (Alabama). This was only the second tournament for the Bulldog duo, and they were up against the No. 3 seed. The Gullickson/Kimbell tandem made their debut a couple weeks ago by winning five straight matches to claim the ITA Southeast Regional.
The USTA/ITA National Indoors runs through Nov. 6, and it is considered the second leg of the collegiate Grand Slam. It takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Gullickson last played here in the 2010 US Open after winning the NCAA singles title.
