Georgia will continue play through Sunday in Charleston

ATHENS, Ga.—The Georgia women’s tennis team went undefeated in singles and doubles play on Friday at the College of Charleston Halloween Challenge.
In doubles, Georgia combined to win three doubles matches 24-2. In the top flight, the second-ranked pair of Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia blanked Caroline Schnell and Sonja Radosevic of Denver, 8-0. In the second flight, Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase, ranked No. 50, followed suit, beating Denver’s Kathryn Hughes and Maureen Slattery, 8-1. In the third flight, Mia King and Lilly Kimbell topped Charlotte Dervyshire and Evy Van Genechten, 8-1.
In singles, the Bulldogs only dropped 13 games. In flight one, third-ranked Herring beat Marshall’s Dana Oppinger, 6-2, 6-0. The junior is now 7-1 this year. In flight three, No. 14 Kowase beat Liza Fieldsend of N.C. State, 6-1, 6-1. In flight four, Kimbell, who is celebrating her birthday, continued her impressive fall campaign with a shutout of N.C. State’s Christy Sipes for her 11th win. In flight five, No. 101 Fuller beat the Wolfpack’s Sophie Nelson, 6-0, 6-1. In flight six, King ended the day with a 6-2, 7-6(5) win over N.C. State’s Natalia Janowicz.
“I thought we played some really great tennis today,” said head coach Jeff Wallace. “We played really well in doubles and we’ve been focusing on that in practice so that good to see. Everyone also played at a really high level in singles. I’m looking forward to more great tennis over the next couple of days.”
The three-day tournament will be broken down in to seven flights with four players in each flight. Flight champions will be determined via a round robin format.
In addition to the host College of Charleston, N.C. State, Marshall and Denver are also participate in the Halloween Challenge. This is the last full team competition of the fall for the Bulldogs. Herring, Kowase and Garcia will travel to New York next week for the ITA National Indoors.
