GAINESVILLE, FLA.-----It will be an all-Georgia final for the doubles title at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Women’s Championships Monday, and Chelsey Gullickson has a chance to win the singles too.
On Sunday, both Georgia doubles teams won their semifinal matches here on the UF campus. The Bulldog team of Kate Fuller and Lauren Herring, ranked No. 20, defeated Ruth Seaborne and Carolina De Los Santos (Florida State) 8-5. The Georgia duo of Gullickson and Lilly Kimbell won by an identical score over Olivia Janowicz and Caroline Hitimana (Florida). The Fuller/Herring team is 11-5 on the year while the Gullickson/Kimbell pair is 4-0. This is their first tournament as a team.
“In this tournament, we have been fighting back in a lot of our doubles matches and that was the story again today,” said Bulldog associate head coach Frank Polito. “Kate and Lauren fell behind 3-0 and then came back. Chelsey and Lilly were down 5-3 and fought back too. They will be playing for a trip to the national tournament in New York now.”
Meanwhile in singles, the ninth-ranked Gullickson advanced to the final with a pair of wins over Gators to move her record to 12-1 this fall. In the quarterfinals, Gullickson dispatched No. 26 Joanna Mather (Florida) 6-0,6-1 and then took care of No. 73 Sofie Oyen (Florida) 6-1,6-1 in the semifinals. Herring fell short in her bid as she was eliminated by top seed and fifth-ranked Lauren Embree (Florida). Embree led 2-0 and Herring was forced to retire. It will be Embree versus Gullickson in Monday’s final slated for a 10 a.m. start. The doubles final will follow the singles match.
“Today was the best that Chelsey has played this fall,” said Polito. “From start to finish, she played clean and solid tennis. She came out and looked strong in her quarterfinal match and then backed it up with another fine performance in the semifinals. She only dropped three games in four sets Sunday.”
The four-day singles and doubles event here on the campus of Florida serves as qualifying for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships next month in New York. The tournament slated for Nov. 3-6 is considered the second leg of the collegiate Grand Slam, and it takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
