Athens, Ga.--The Georgia women's tennis team had two doubles pairs and three of its singles competitors advance to the round of 16 on Friday at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships.

"It's a great weekend," said head coach Jeff Wallace. "There are so many good teams and so many good players. We're out there fighting for everything that we can get. Lilly [Kimbell] obviously had a big day beating a seeded player who she had lost to this summer so I'm very excited about that. It's good to see everyone out here working on their games and trying to get better."

In doubles, No. 50 Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase topped Simona Weymar and Mariana Cunningham of North Florida, 8-0. Shortly after, Mia King and Lilly Kimbell topped Sofia Baptista and Clare Mendell, 8-4. Both teams advance to the round of 16 which will be played on Saturday at 9 a.m. and will be followed by the quarterfinals at 10:30 a.m. The No. 2 doubles pair of Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia fell 8-6 in the opening round.

In singles, top-seeded Kowase was the first of three Bulldogs to advance to Saturday's round of 16. She beat UCF's Courtney Cesarini 6-1, 6-0 before beating USF's Olaya Garrido 6-3, 6-0. Garcia followed, defeating UNF's Marina Cunningham 6-0, 6-0, later going on to beat Olga Martinez of USF, 7-6, 6-4. Kimbell edged out FSU's Laurence Porry 6-3, 6-3 in the first round and then upset No. 54 Kelsey Laurente, the seventh seed in the tournament, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.

King battled against KSU's Alexandra Apostu, ultimately winning 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, but she later fell to Florida's No. 38 Alex Cercone, the tournament's fourth seed, 6-1, 6-3.  Fuller also won her first round match 6-1, 6-0 over Georgia Southern's Jordana Klein, but a strong comeback attempt came up short against Miami's Monique Albuquerque as Fuller lost 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

The singles and doubles winners from all 12 regional sites will earn bids to the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York, Nov. 7-10.

The event is being held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex and admission is free.
