Pacific Palisades, Calif.—Junior Lauren Herring advanced to the semifinals of the main draw at the 2013 ITA/Riviera All-American Championships Friday.
Herring beat North Carolina’s Hayley Carter 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the second round and then topped UCLA’s No. 11 Kyle McPhillips 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals.
“It was great for Lauren to pull out both matches today,” said assistant coach Drake Bernstein. “She was locked in during both of them and it paid off when she saved match point in her first match. She’s ready for another challenge tomorrow.”
Herring will square off with North Carolina’s Jamie Loeb tomorrow.
Also on Friday, No. 14 Maho Kowase was eliminated from the tournament, falling to No. 2 Robin Anderson 6-2, 7-5.
In doubles, the No. 2 duo of Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia will face Isaura Enrique and Samantha Vickers from Tulsa tomorrow. The Georgia tandem must win three more matches to win the consolation draw and receive an automatic bid to the National Indoor Championships next month.
Part of the collegiate grand slam, the All-American Championships will host more than 200 players over a two-week period. Pre-qualifying took place over the weekend and the qualifying round will last through Wednesday. The Main Draw began Thursday and will last through the weekend. Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 8-11 in New York, N.Y.
