Pacific Palisades, Calif.—Two Georgia players advanced on Thursday on the first day of the main draw at the 2013 ITA/Riviera All-American Championships.
In singles, remaining Bulldogs No. 3 Lauren Herring and No. 14 Maho Kowase both advanced to the second round. Herring beat No. 15 Samantha Vickers 6-2, 6-3 and Kowase topped No. 31 Caroline Price, 6-4, 3-1, Ret (inj).
“Both Lauren and Silvia played great matches today,” said assistant coach Drake Bernstein. “Both of them are looking forward to getting out on the court tomorrow and taking advantage of another great opportunity to compete.”
In doubles, after enjoying a first-round bye, the No. 2 duo of Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia were outdone by No. 17 Carol Zhao and Kristie Ahn of Stanford, 8-3.
Tomorrow, two singles rounds and one doubles round will be played. To begin the day, Herring will dual Hayley Carter of North Carolina and Kowase will square off with No. 2 Robin Anderson of UCLA. Garcia and Fuller will play in the consolation draw tomorrow.
Part of the collegiate grand slam, the All-American Championships will host more than 200 players over a two-week period. Pre-qualifying took place over the weekend and the qualifying round will last through Wednesday. The Main Draw will begin on Thursday and last through the following weekend. Players in the qualifying draws must win three matches to advance to the next draw.
Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 8-11 in New York, N.Y.
