Lauren Herring beat the No. 2 seed in singles and teamed with Kate Fuller to oust the top seed in doubles.

PACIFIC PALISAES, CALIF.-----Georgia sophomore Lauren Herring notched a couple of impressive wins in day one of qualifying action at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
Tuesday's action began with doubles and the Bulldog team of Herring and Kate Fuller ousted the top seed. They defeated the 18th-ranked Texas tandem of Linda Padegimaite and Noel Scott 8-3. The Georgia pair, ranked 30th, improved to 3-1 on the year. They will have to win two matches Wednesday to advance to the main draw.
In the first round of singles, Herring posted another upset, eliminating the No. 2 seed in Marianne Jodoin (Duke). After dropping the first set to the nation's 27th-ranked Blue Devil, Herring, who is ranked No. 53, stormed back to post a 4-6,6-2,6-0 decision. Georgia junior Maho Kowase breezed past Gabriella DeSimone (USC) 6-1,6-2 Meanwhile Fuller, ranked No. 62, eliminated eighth seed Edyta Cieplucha (SMU) who is ranked No. 34. Fuller registered a 6-2,6-3 win.
In the second round, Kowase was the lone Bulldog to advance as she beat Marie Casares (Vanderbilt) 6-4,6-0 to improve to 5-0 on the year. Herring fell to Aleksandra Josifoska (UNLV) 2-6,6-2,7-5 while Danielle Collins (Florida) edged Fuller 7-5,6-4. Herring and Fuller are now 4-1 this fall.
Players must win three matches in qualifying to advance to the main draw. On Wednesday, the Fuller/Herring team will face DeSimone/Scandalis (USC) in the second round at 1 p.m. ET. Kowase will look to earn a spot in the main draw when she squares off against Lina Lilekite (Miami, Fla.) at 2:45 p.m. ET.
