LOS ANGELES----Freshman Lauren Herring was the lone Bulldog winner in day one of pre-qualifying at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
Herring posted a 6-3,6-2 victory over Alexa Lee (Cal Poly) in the first round. However, Herring was eliminated in the second round by No. 86 ranked Katie Le (Santa Clara) 6-1,6-1. It was the first collegiate singles loss for Herring as her record stands at 7-1.
Georgia’s other two single entries did not make it to the second round. Sophomore Lilly Kimbell fell to Anais Dallara (Long Beach) 7-5,6-2 while sophomore Kate Fuller captured the first set against Zoe Scandalis (USC) but then lost the match, 4-6,6-3,6-1. In doubles, Georgia’s tandem of Kimbell/Maho Kowase was beaten 8-4 by Maria Belaya/Jeltje Loomans (William & Mary) in the first round.
Up next, Kowase and senior Nadja Gilchrist will be in action Oct. 4-5 in the qualifying singles draw at this event. The main draw of the first leg of the collegiate grand slam will be Oct. 6-9 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades. Gilchrist is in the main draw of the doubles with senior Chelsey Gullickson based on the duo’s national ranking and previous tournament showing.
