Bulldogs Capture Hoosier Classic Singles Flights
Sept. 25, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, IND.----The Georgia women’s tennis team capped a successful showing at the Hoosier Classic Sunday going 6-1 in singles to win three flights in the round-robin event on the campus of Indiana.
In flight one, Bulldog senior Chelsey Gullickson and sophomore Maho Kowase were co-champions after going a perfect 3-0. A change was made to the flights to avoid teammates facing each other. Gullickson and Kowase were slated to square off in the final but instead competed against Kansas State players. The ninth-ranked Gullickson defeated 35th-ranked Petra Niedermayerova 6-4,6-2. The 56th-ranked Kowase cruised past Karla Bonancic 6-2,6-1.
Bulldog senior Nadja Gilchrist, ranked 43rd nationally, captured the flight two crown with a 6-0,6-2 win over Caroyln Chupa (Indiana) to go 3-0 on the weekend. Georgia sophomore Kate Fuller edged Alecia Kauss (Indiana) 7-6(5),7-5 to finish the weekend 2-1 in singles.
In flight three, Bulldog freshman Lauren Herring went undefeated on the weekend after posting a 6-4,7-5 win over Micah Hermsdorf (Abilene Christian). Georgia sophomore Alina Jerjomina got her first singles win of the weekend with a 6-2,6-2 decision over Carmen Borau (Kansas State). In flight four, Katie Klyczek (Indiana) beat Georgia sophomore Rachael Hart 6-1,6-2.
“I was pleased with how we played this weekend, and it was good preparation for the All-America Championships that are coming up,” said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. “We went 16-5 in singles and 9-3 in doubles so were able to get a lot of matches in and that’s what you’re aiming for in these fall tournaments.”
Up next, six Bulldogs will be competing in the All-American Championships, which is the first leg of the collegiate grand slam and is slated for Oct. 1-9 in California. It features a 64-player singles main draw and a 32-team doubles field with a few spots available through prequalifying and qualifying draws.
Gullickson has been selected for the main draw in singles and also will play with Gilchrist in the main draw of doubles. Gilchrist and Kowase will start off in the singles qualifying draw. Sophomores Lilly Kimbell and Kate Fuller are in the prequalifying singles draw. Fuller and Herring are in the qualifying doubles draw.
The tournament will start with the pre-qualifying rounds Oct. 1-2 on the campus of UCLA, followed by the qualifying rounds Oct. 4-5 and the main draw Oct. 6-9 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades. Players must win three matches in prequalifying and three matches in qualifying to advance to the main draw. The Riviera Tennis Club will play host to the main draw for the 27th consecutive year.
