Points were awarded for wins in respective flights and Herring and Kowase went 3-0 in singles action. The round-robin three-day event featured players from Michigan, Arizona State, Florida, Iowa, Utah and Western Michigan.
On Sunday, Herring blanked Stephanie Vlad (Arizona State) 6-0,6-0 while Kowase dispatched Joanna Smith (Arizona State) 6-1,6-2. Also, Georgia junior Kate Fuller and freshman Makenzie Craft notched wins on the final day of play. In doubles, the Fuller/Herring team registered an 8-1 victory over Jill Pastunink and Kathlee Hawkins (Western Michigan). The team of Kowase/Lilly Kimbell shut out Caroline Aleck and Kelsey King (Western Michigan) 8-0.
“We had a very successful opening weekend and handled the elements well,” said Bulldog head coach Jeff Wallace. “We played some indoors and some outdoors due to the cold and wind, and each day everyone came out with a purpose. I was pleased to see that. This was a good start, and it was nice to be able to compete against some other players after practicing against each other.”
Up next, Georgia will have a contingent competing in the All-American Championships in California starting next week. The tournament features three stages: pre-qualifying (Sept. 29-30) and qualifying (Oct. 2-3) held on the UCLA campus and then the main draw (Oct. 4-7 at Riviera Tennis Club, Pacific Palisades). Spots in each stage are available based on preseason ranking, past performance and results from this year.
Kowase, Herring and Fuller are in the qualifying singles draw and the Fuller/Herring tandem is in the qualifying doubles too. Currently, the Kowase/Kimbell duo is an alternate in the qualifying doubles.
