ATHENS, Ga. --- The No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs women's tennis team dropped its regular season finale against No. 21 Texas A&M, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The Bulldogs (17-4, 11-2) were edged in the deciding doubles match to go into singles play trailing. Marta Gonzalez and Kennedy Shaffer, ranked 67th in ITA singles, put Georgia on the scoreboard and in the lead early, but the other courts suffered early deficits and fell. The Aggies (16-11, 6-7) pushed their win streak to five matches.

"Super tough loss today, Texas A&M came in and played great against us," Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. "They had a lot of momentum and a lot of energy after they won that doubles point. I really thought we had our chance to get that doubles point on court No. 2 when we were up 4-1. Losing that doubles point can really put you behind. We had a good start to the singles matches, we were up on almost every court, but gave it away. We lost a couple first sets and it got away for a while and you just can't do that at this level."

The first singles match to conclude was Gonzalez's 6-2,6-2 win over Macarena Olivares on court No. 5. The freshman from Madrid, Spain pushed her season record to 18-4 and now has won four matches in a row.

The Bulldogs pulled ahead 2-1 soon after as Kennedy Shaffer finished off Domenica Gonzalez with an overhead slam to win 6-2,6-3 on court No. 3. The win marked Shaffer's ninth consecutive victory and brings her yearly total to 22-5.

The Bulldogs and the Aggies split courts No. 1 and No. 3 in doubles causing the focus shift to the deciding middle court. The 29th-ranked duo of Elena Christofi and Shaffer fought back from down love-30, 4-5 to tie it at 5-all but lost in the final two highly contested games.

Caroline Brinson and Ellen Perez, ranked 11th in ITA doubles, defeated fourth-ranked Rachel Pierson and Rutuja Bhosale, 6-4, on court No. 1 to mark their fourth-straight win.

The Southeastern Conference Tournament starts Wednesday and will be in Nashville, Tenn., on Vanderbilt's campus. The seedings for the SEC tournament will be announced later today.
