Georgia (9-1) seized the doubles point with victories at all three positions. The 11th-ranked duo of Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist got off the court first with a convincing 8-3 win over 31st-ranked Alyssa Hibberd and Tiffany Welcher of Memphis (6-2). Georgia's No. 2 team of Lauren Herring and Kate Fuller quickly followed suit with an 8-3 victory over Stefanie Mikesz and Mariya Slupska. The Bulldogs topped off the doubles point by claiming a third and final win at No. 3 as Maho Kowase and Lilly Kimbell beat Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray, 8-5. The win moved the duo to a seven-match winning streak.
"First, Memphis played a fantastic match against us," said head coach Jeff Wallace. "We knew coming into singles they were really going to get after it and they did with their big hitters. But our team this year, we just fight and fight and fight and find ways and that's what we did."
In singles, Memphis jumped out to a fast start winning three of the first four matches on court. Georgia's Lilly Kimbell fell to 66th-ranked Stefanie Mikesz 6-3, 7-6(3) at No. 4. Memphis then took the lead as Tiffany Welcher defeated 44th-ranked Maho Kowase at No. 3 Singles 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Lauren Herring, ranked No. 52, evened out the match with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over 70th-ranked Mariya Slupska. With the match tied at two, Courtney Collins, ranked No. 73, of Memphis upset ninth ranked Chelsey Gullickson 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(7). Sophomore Kate Fuller evened the score 3-3 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Alyssa Hibberd. In a touch battle to clinch the match, Alina Jerjomina downed Kelly Gray 7-5, 6-3.
"I knew it could come down to me and it was nerve racking, but at the same time I just played and I played the best tennis I had played this season," Jerjomina said. "My team was there to cheer me on all through the match and that meant so much to me."
"I'm really excited for Alina," Wallace said. "She hasn't been in that situation before and it all came down to her court and for her to have that kind of energy out there and just to smile and have fun, that's what its all about. You're going to play well when you look that confident and comfortable out there and she did and played great."
The match was originally slated to be played outdoors, but was moved to the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts due to rain in the Athens area.
With the win, Georgia moves to 4-0 all-time versus Memphis.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday against Clemson. The match is scheduled to be played outdoors at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex and admission is free.
