ATHENS, Ga.—Members of the sixth-ranked Bulldogs began and ended their day by winning matches in tiebreakers here Saturday at the Georgia Invitational.
The Bulldogs first action of the day came in doubles, winning two and dropping one. Georgia’s Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia edged Hannah Toro and Anja Cosovic (Troy) 8-7(5) while the Bulldog duo of Lauren Herring and Mia King fell by the same score to Karoline Grymel and Lyubov Dorofeeva (Troy). Also, Georgia’s Lilly Kimbell and Makenzie Craft routed Rosaura Ramirez-Vega and Candela Munoz-Giron (Troy) 8-1.
In singles, eighth-ranked Herring improved to 19-2 this year with another straight set victory. On Saturday, she defeated Memphis senior Courtney Collins 6-3,6-0.
Bulldog freshman Mia King won a spirited match against Memphis sophomore Liza Tymchenko, 7-6(4),7-5. In the first set tiebreaker, King trailed 4-2 before rallying back to win five straight points and take the early lead in the contest. Fuller, who is ranked No. 54, posted a 6-4,6-3 win over Tiffany Welcher (Memphis). Freshman Silvia Garcia posted a straight set win too. Overall, Georgia won five out of its seven singles matches on the day.
Kimbell’s match against Alyssa Hibberd (Memphis) closed out Saturday’s action for the Bulldogs. After dropping the first set 6-1, Kimbell fought back to take the second 6-4. In lieu of a third set, a 10-point super tiebreaker was played to decide the match. Hibberd’s powerful serves and groundstrokes helped her take a 5-1 advantage. Then, Kimbell recovered to win six consecutive points to take a 7-5 advantage. Hibberd rallied to tie it at 8-all and then a lob winner followed by a backhand winner gave Kimbell the tiebreaker 10-8 and the match.
“She started out playing amazing and was hitting the ball hard, and it took a while to adjust and try to slow things down,” said Kimbell. “I started mixing up my shots and got back in the match. The tiebreaker started out like that too and then I adjusted and came back for the win.”
“It was another exciting day at the Georgia Invitational,” said Bulldog coach Jeff Wallace. “We’ve got the start of the dual match season next week, and this weekend it’s all about getting ready and learning things about this team. We played a few tiebreakers today. I thought the Troy doubles teams came out and played phenomenal against us in the morning, and we capped the day with a great comeback from Lilly in her match, winning it in a super tiebreaker.”
The round-robin event concludes Sunday with singles starting at 8 a.m. The Bulldogs are slated to hit the courts for their matches at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
