Solid First Day For Bulldogs At Georgia Invitational
Jan. 18, 2013
ATHENS-----The Bulldogs won 12 of their 13 matches Friday, six in doubles and six in singles during day one of the Georgia Invitational at the Hopkins Indoor Courts.
Freshman Mia King made her Bulldog debut with sophomore Lauren Herring, and they upset the 34th-ranked tandem of Karla Bonacic and Petra Niedermayerova (Kansas State). The Bulldog duo trailed 5-3 before reeling off five straight games to take the match. Then, King paired with junior Kate Fuller and registered an 8-3 win over the 18th-ranked team of Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray (Memphis). Herring teamed with Maho Kowase and routed the 35th-ranked duo of Stefanie Mikesz and Caroline Wegner 8-1 (Memphis).
Georgia freshman Silvia Garcia enjoyed a successful debut too. Garcia and junior Lilly Kimbell defeated Skylar Kuykendall and Liza Tymchenko (Memphis) 8-5. Then, she picked up her first career Bulldog singles win, dispatching Carmen Borau Ramos 6-0,6-1 including an ace on match point.
The feature singles match of the day pitted No. 8 Herring versus No. 15 Niedermayerova. After exchanging breaks, the match went on serve until 4-all when Herring notched another one and then held serve to take the first set 6-4. In the second, Herring picked up two early breaks to build a 4-1 lead and then cruised in her service game for a 5-1 advantage. Niedermayerova forced a seventh game with a strong serve-and-volley approach and then secured a break of her own to close it to 5-3. Herring converted on her next opportunity, breaking Niedermayerova for the set and match, winning 6-4,6-3.
"I knew going in that it was going to be a tough match because she is a really good player," said Herring who improved to 18-2 this season including 7-2 against ranked opponents. "I was able to play well against her; I've seen her play against some of my teammates last year, and it worked out today."
"I liked our doubles today, we played some different combinations, and they all played well," said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace who celebrated another birthday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. "Then in singles, we got some big wins including from Lauren and Maho, really all the way down the line so it was a good start."
In her first collegiate singles match, King trailed Aleman (KSU) 3-1 and then won the next nine games to take the first set 6-3 and build a comfortable 4-0 lead en route to a 6-3,6-1 decision. The lone defeat for the Bulldogs came in the final match of the night. In lieu of a third set, No. 76 Makenzie Craft (UGA) and Amina St. Hill (KSU) opted for a super tiebreaker. The Wildcat emerged with a victory, 4-6,7-6(5),1-0(8).
Action continues Saturday at 10 a.m. with several Bulldog tandems playing doubles. Georgia players have singles matches slated at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Admission is free throughout the tournament as the field includes players from No. 6 Georgia, No. 58 Memphis, No. 67 Kansas State and Troy.
