2014 NCAA Women's Tennis National Championship Quotes
UCLA def. North Carolina, 4-3
UCLA Coach Sampras Webster
On winning the championship...
"I'm just really proud of my team. We came out really excited to be playing fora championship. We knew that doubles was going to be really important. North Carolina played very well but we were able to pull out two of those doubles which was, again, important for us. We haven't lost a doubles point all season so there was a lot of pressure on us to do that. We knew that North Carolina was a strong team, singles-wise, so I just told my team to focus one point at a time and hopefully not get too caught up in the moment. They did a great job. It came down to the last match with Kyle [McPhillips] and she was able to pull out that last set to give us that fourth point. I'm so happy for my team.
UCLA Sophomore Kyle McPhillips
On clinching the match...
"This is the single best accomplishment I've ever had in my life. I've played Wimbledon, Australian Open, French Open, US Open, and nothing compares to this day right here. Winning individually is so different from winning for your team, your coaches, and school. There's been so effort, and people, and hard work that has gone into this moment right here, so this is the highlight of my tennis career.
UCLA Junior Robin Anderson
On today’s match...
"I went into the match thinking that I really had nothing to lose, so I just decided to go out there and play my game. I tried to stay really aggressive and, regardless of theoutcome, just know that I gave it my all."
UNC Head Coach Brian Kalbas
On today’s match…
“Obviously, it’s always tough to end your season with a loss at any point of time. We've never been to the finals before so I don't know how to feel, but I have mixed emotions. I'm really proud of our team. We fought extremely hard. We put ourselves in a difficult position not winning the doubles point. But I'm really proud the way we fought back and gave ourselves a chance to win. UCLA is such a great team. It's heartbreaking to end the season, but I'm really proud of our team and our run at the NCAA tournament.
On Caroline Price…
"She's disappointed because she feels like she let the team down. Anybody that is out there that is giving everything they had is not letting the team down. She happened to be the last match out there. She shows her emotion on the court and wears her heart on the sleeve. We wouldn't be here right now if she hadn't come through against Stanford. She has another year and I know she's going to grow from this experience."
