ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia softball head coach Lu Harris-Champer has announced that Savannah McHellon of McDonough, Ga., has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Bulldogs beginning in 2014-15
“Savannah is a powerful athlete that is capable of giving us a lot of innings in the circle and will make our bullpen deeper and more talented,” Harris-Champer said. “However, her power as a hitter is off the charts. She is the type of player that, when at the plate during a game or batting practice, no one will want to leave their seat. The distance that she routinely hits balls is what made her the 18th ranked player in the country by Student Sports Softball and we are thrilled to have a player of her caliber staying at home and joining her home state school!”
McHellon comes to Georgia ranked as the 18th-best prospect by Student Sports Softball. A three-time first team all-state selection, she spent three seasons playing for Gidget Gue at Ola High School after spending her freshman year at Mundy’s Mill High School. At Mundy’s Mill, McHellon led her team to Region 4-AAAA Championship after leading the team with a .763 batting average. For her efforts as a freshman, she was named the school’s Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year, as well as the Region Player of the Year. She was named the All-Region First Team as a pitcher. In her sophomore year at Ola High School, she led her team to a third-place finish at the GHSA Class 4AAAA State Championship. As a junior, McHellon was named Ola’s Varsity Offensive MVP and the Female Underclass Athlete of the Year. In 2013, McHellon helped Ola to a Class AAAAA State Championship and played in the Georgia High School Senior All-Star game.
In addition to her prep career, McHellon played travel ball with the Georgia Power Academy under Head Coach Ernie Yarborough, where she was named the Offensive Player of the Year in 2012.
McHellon is the daughter of Darrel and LaDonna McHellon.
McHellon is the sixth and final player to be announced as part of Georgia’s eighth-ranked (Student Sports Softball) signing class that will join the program in 2014-15.
