ATHENS, Ga. – The 10th-seeded University of Georgia softball team will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., this weekend on to take on seventh-seeded Tennessee in the Super Regional round of the 2012 NCAA Softball Tournament. Georgia and Tennessee will play the first of the best of three series on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. The second game will be played Sunday at 1 p.m., with the if necessary game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Saturday’s game will be aired on ESPNU with the Sunday games airing on ESPN.
Georgia (44-15) enters the weekend having beat North Carolina 2-1 on Sunday to claim the Athens Regional. After dropping the first game in the Knoxville Regional, the Lady Vols (50-11) won four-straight games, including two against Virginia Tech on Sunday to take the Knoxville Regional title.
The Bulldogs and Lady Vols split a pair of games with each other during the regular season. In the first game of a midweek double-header, Kristyn Sandberg hit a game-tying home run in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings with the scoring knotted at one. The Bulldogs plated two runs in the top of the 11th to take the win.
Tennessee grabbed a 2-1 victory in the second game of the double header with the help of a two-RBI performance by Madison Shipman.
