2012 NCAA Division I Softball Championship
North Carolina 5, Coastal Carolina 3
North Carolina Head Coach Donna J. Papa
"At this point, it's just 'survive and advance' and that's what we did. I thought that Lori (Spingola) pitched well again. We could have scored a few more runs with the bases loaded and a few more opportunities to kind of put them away. We scored enough runs to win, but I would like to have just put a few more up on the board. It would have enabled us to get her (Spingola) out of the game and give her some rest because tomorrow's tough. We'll be facing a tough Georgia team, they can hit the ball and they have three quality pitchers. Hopefully, Lori's going to have a little more gas in the tank and she won't be running on fumes."
On playing Georgia again...
"They're such an experienced team, as far as postseason play goes. Even though they have a lot of new faces, they've been there before. They have that mentality; they know what it takes to get there. I'm sure it's nice for them, going into the game tomorrow, knowing they have to be beaten twice. Both teams will come out and play hard because everybody wants to make to the next level."
Coastal Carolina Head Coach Kelley Green
On win over Georgia Southern...
"I thought we came out in the first game and got our first regional win for the program for the first time in quite some time, so that was nice to do with this group. It was nice to get a Regional win under our belts. I thought (Ashley) Bagwell pitched a nice first game, and we got a couple of clutch hits there."
On game against North Carolina...
"The second game we just had a rough first inning. (Kiana) Quolas missed her spot a couple of times, but our defense really let us down that first inning. Other than that, I thought we outplayed them. After that, Quolas started settling down, and we scored some runs and did great things. I was pleased after that bad first one that we settled down and turned some heads and made people think that we belong here. That was good I'm glad that we could go out and play well the last five innings of the game."
On carrying Regional experience into next season...
"This is huge for the level of experience for our kids. This is only my third year, but our first two years we weren't even over .500. So not only is this our first winning season, but we have a lot of inexperience at championship play whether it is in the conference or a Regional where you have even more pressure on you and you are playing even better teams. We will absolutely carry this into next season, and this will only help us in the future."
