May 15, 2011

ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Georgia has been selected as one of 16 regional host sites for the 2011 NCAA Division I Softball Championships, the NCAA announced on Sunday night.

The 2011 NCAA Athens Regional at the Jack Turner Softball Stadium will feature host Georgia (47-12) from the Southeastern Conference, Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament champion Florida State (30-26), the University of Alabama at Birmingham (38-17) from Conference USA and Colonial Athletic Association champion Georgia State (36-23).

In addition to earning the top seed for the Athens Regional, Georgia is also the sixth-overall national seed. The regional round of play features a four-team double elimination bracket, and the Bulldogs opening round contest will come against Georgia State Friday at 5 p.m. ET. Florida State and UAB will play in the opening game of the Athens Regional Friday at 2:30 p.m.

Georgia is making its 10th-consecutive and 10th overall NCAA postseason appearance in school history, all under head coach Lu Harris-Champer. The Bulldogs are 36-18 overall in NCAA postseason play, and advanced to the Women's College World Series final four in 2009 and 2010.

A total of 64 teams were selected to the NCAA Tournament with 30 conferences being awarded automatic qualification, while the remaining 34 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket. The top 16 teams were seeded nationally with Georgia earning the sixth national seed. The SEC had a total of seven teams selected for the tournament, with four of those teams earning one of the 16 national seeds. Each of the 16 Regional winners will advance to the Super Regional round of play May 28-29. In Super Regionals, eight sites play host to a best-of-three game series with the winners earning one of eight spots in the NCAA Division I Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City June 2-8.
