LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore Chelsea Wilkinson has repeated as the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week, it was announced today, May 13. It is the second-straight week that Wilkinson has received the honor. She becomes the first player this year to earn NFCA National Player of the Week honors in consecutive weeks. She becomes the first Georgia player to earn NFCA Player of the Week honors twice in the same season. She is also just the second Georgia pitcher to earn National Player of the Week honors by any organization twice in a career.
Just a week after reaping the NFCA weekly honor by virtue of an outstanding performance during a series against nationally ranked Kentucky, Wilkinson continued her impressive roll from the circle by guiding the Bulldogs to their first Southeastern Conference Championship title.
Named the event’s Most Valuable Player, the Taylorsville, N.C., native registered a 3-0 mark with a 1.07 ERA and 23 strikeouts over 19.2 innings of work with victories over No. 5 Florida, No. 6 Alabama and No. 16 Kentucky. She set the tone for UGA during a quarterfinal match-up against the Gators, allowing just two hits and striking out nine in a 2-0, complete-game shutout.
Summoned into the semifinal match-up in relief against the regular season champ Crimson Tide, Wilkinson permitted just a single earned run on four hits and stuck out five as Georgia prevailed 5-3. She again went the distance against the Wildcats in the SEC title tilt, granting a pair of earned tallies on just three hits with nine strikeouts as UGA completed its championship run via a 5-2 triumph.
Overall, Wilkinson holds an impressive 29-7 record for the year with a 2.04 ERA, six solo shutouts, 23 complete games and 257 strikeouts over 219.1 innings of work.
Wilkinson and the Georgia softball team will return to action as the No. 4 National Seed this weekend, May 16-18, in the NCAA Athens Regional. The Bulldogs will host NC State, UAB and Chattanooga.
