ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia softball team has punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament and will travel out west to Arizona to play in the Tempe Regional, hosted by nationally-seeded Arizona State. The Regional will take place May 17-19 and will be televised on ESPNU. The Bulldogs will kick off the Regional on Friday, May 17 at 3:30 p.m., against San Diego State.
The 2013 NCAA Tempe Regional will feature Arizona State (45-10), Georgia (38-19), San Diego State (35-18) and San Jose State (42-15).
It is the 12th time in program history that the Bulldogs have been selected to participate in an NCAA Regional, all under Head Coach Lu Harris-Champer. Last season, the Bulldogs hosted a Regional, going 3-0 and advancing to the Knoxville Super Regional. The last time that the Bulldogs opened NCAA Regional play away from Jack Turner Stadium was in 2009 when Georgia was the No. 1 seed in the Chapel Hill Regional. That season, the Bulldogs advanced to the Final Four of the Women’s College World Series.
Georgia is 44-22 all-time in the NCAA Softball Tournament. The Bulldogs own a 32-10 all-time record in NCAA Regionals and have gone undefeated in each of the past five Regionals it has played in, dating back to the 2008 season.
Georgia has not faced any of its Regional opponents this season and is 1-2 all-time against the Tempe Regional field. The Bulldogs are 0-2 against Arizona State and 1-0 against San Diego State. Georgia has never faced San Jose State.
A total of 64 teams were selected to the NCAA Tournament with 31 teams receiving automatic qualification, while the remaining 33 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket. The top 16 teams were seeded nationally and were selected as host sites. The SEC set a league record by sending a total of XX teams selected for the tournament, with seven of those teams earning one of the 16 national seeds and three earning top eight national seeds. Each of the 16 Regional winners will advance to the Super Regional round of play May 23-26. In Super Regionals, eight sites play host to a best-of-three game series with the winners earning one of eight spots in the NCAA Division I Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City May 30-June 5.
