Georgia to Host NCAA Softball Regional; Receives No. 4 Overall Seed

May 11, 2014

ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Georgia has been selected as the No. 4 overall seed and one of 16 regional host sites for the 2014 NCAA Division I Softball Championships, the NCAA announced on Sunday night, May 11. The No. 4 is the highest NCAA seed ever for the Bulldogs. Georgia enters the tournament as the automatic bid from the Southeastern Conference after taking home the program's first-ever SEC Tournament title on Saturday, May 10 after defeating Kentucky 5-2. On their way to the title, the Bulldogs defeated fifth-seeded Florida and the No. 2 seeded Alabama.

As Georgia is seeded fourth nationally, should it advance to the Super Regional Round, the Bulldogs will serve as the hosts and welcome the winner of the Waco Regional to Athens.

The 2014 NCAA Athens Regional at the Jack Turner Softball Stadium will feature host Georgia (45-12) from the Southeastern Conference, NC State (34-16) from the Atlantic Coast Conference, UAB (31-25) from the Conference USA and Chattanooga (34-19) from the Southern Conference.

The Bulldogs have faced both NC State and UAB this season, going 2-1 in those games. Georgia handed NC State an 8-0 loss and went 1-1 against UAB. The Blazers took the first game with the Bulldogs 8-0, before Georgia answered with a 10-1 win.

Georgia is making both its 13th-consecutive NCAA postseason appearance, all under head coach Lu Harris-Champer. The Bulldogs are 46-24 overall in NCAA postseason play, and advanced to the Women's College World Series final four in 2009 and 2010.

A total of 64 teams were selected to the NCAA Tournament with 30 conferences being awarded automatic qualification, while the remaining 34 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket. The top 16 teams were seeded nationally with Georgia earning the 4th overall seed.

The SEC put 11 teams into the NCAA Tournament this season, matching the conference record that was set a season ago. Of those 11 teams, three received top-eight seeds, while three more will host a Regional. Each of the 16 Regional winners will advance to the Super Regional round of play May 24-25.

In Super Regionals, eight sites play host to a best-of-three game series with the winners earning one of eight spots in the NCAA Division I Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City May 29-June 4.
